Playdough is awesome for keeping little hands busy and developing motor skills and strength. As a mom with celiac disease, I’ve kept my distance from wheat-containing name brands like Play-Doh. Because when you have a little one who loves to cuddle up and spontaneously touches your face and actually says things like, “Can I put my finger in your mouth?,” having home be a gluten-free safe zone is essential for maintaining sanity. When I’m not on red alert about keeping myself safe from gluten contamination, I have a lot more patience for everyday parenting.
Since our son loves Play-Doh (we let him use it at Grandma’s house and wash his hands well afterwards), I wanted to find a gluten-free playdough recipe that meets his needs and mine. There are a lot of cold winter days ahead, and even though he’d be happy to play outside and freeze for hours, we’re still going to be spending a lot of time indoors over the next few months.
This past weekend, we tried making our very first batch, using Wellness Mama’s Gluten-Free Homemade Playdough Recipe. I’d never tried a playdough recipe that required cooking before. After the recommended 3 minutes on the stove, my dough was still way too sticky. I ended up cooking it for several more minutes (probably 10 minutes total), and it turned into a much more workable product. The consistency was a little different than I expected, but our little one had lots of fun playing with it and rolling it into little balls.
We’ll probably experiment with other playdough recipes. I’m hoping to try this Edible Gluten-Free No Cook Playdough next. The texture looks amazing from the pictures. Plus, if I don’t have to cook it, I don’t have to wash an extra pan. 😉 We’re excited for lots of playdough playtime in our future!
